About Nashville

Our History

The Nashville Chapter, consisting of eight members, formed on October 11, 1985. The chapter currently has over 30 members who are employed by the various municipal, cooperatives or government electric, water, wastewater, gas and phone utilities, and associations that operate in and around the greater Nashville area.

The Nashville Chapter has produced two national and international presidents, four Member of the Year Award recipients, six OAK Award winners, nine POWER Award recipients and three Honorary Life Members. Several others have been elected to national and international officer positions and still others have chaired or been members of international committees.  We are proud of Debbie Sain, who created and designed a new logo for WiNUP International in 2014 and again in 2023 for the 100th year anniversary logo.

Community outreach is an important part of the Nashville Chapter's yearly activities. Each year, the chapter supports a local STEM initiative called TWISTER, Tennessee Women in Science, Technology, Engineering & Research, that is a one-day professional conference for high school girls. The chapter awards the annual Virginia Clark Memorial STEM Scholarship to a high school lady entering into a STEM degree at a university each year. In addition, the chapter has various fundraisers, and members volunteer at various community service events.

The chapter meets in person and virtually (alternating generally) every month, holds two business meetings, and one meeting in December for the installation of new officers. The chapter hosted its first conference in 1989, its second in 2003 and had an extremely successful conference in 2016.

Goals

  • Continue to recruit potential members while retaining our existing membership.

  • Bring value to our membership through professional growth with speakers as well as tours of local utilities.

  • Increase participation in International committees.
  • Be involved in STEM initiatives in our communities

“If people are doubting how far you can go, go so far that you can't hear them anymore.”
