About New York

Our History

The New York Chapter is the parent chapter of WiNUP. The chapter originally formed in 1923 because seven women met during the annual meeting for the Society for Electrical Development. These women were pioneers, working to promote the use of electric appliances through articles, presentations, research labs and model kitchens. They recognized the benefits of supporting on another, and of meeting and networking with other women working in these areas. The meetings were so successful, the founders decided to establish a not-for-profit professional organization dedicated to professional and leadership development. The group filed its original articles of incorporation with the New York Secretary of State in 1927 to officially become The Electrical Women's Round Table, Inc.

New York purposely remained the one and only chapter until 1948 when its leadership realized there were numerous women across the country who needed the support of an organization like EWRT. Acting on that knowledge, EWRT opened its doors to other chapters.

The New York Chapter has produced seven International Presidents, including the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 9th, 14th and 23rd. The chapter also had several dedicated members who were recognized for their continual and outstanding contributions, including board member Loretta DiCamillo. Loretta was named Honorary Life Member in 2003. She turned 80 in April 2015.
