About ArkLaTex
Our History
The ArkLaTex Chapter was chartered July 10, 2007, thanks to the efforts of Robin Heggler Alexander and Vivian Andrews. The chapter took its name from the local region known as ArkLaTex, which is made up of areas of Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. Alexander, who joined WiNUP as a member-at-large in 2006, was the chapter’s first chair. Other members of the chapters’ first executive committee were Alysa Irving, vice chair; Casandra Smith, secretary; and H. Nell Gibbs, treasurer. Debra Jackson was the chapter’s first representative to the international board.
As the chapter grew, members quickly took on hosting the 2009 international conference “Rio on the Red” in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 2014, the chapter joined the North Texas and South Texas chapters as hosts of the annual conference, with Andrews serving as a tri-chair.
Each year, the chapter executive committee sets a theme for its calendar of events. The themes, such as “Promoting U” and “WiNUP: Your Brand for the Future,” set the stage for members’ professional and leadership development and align with WiNUP’s mission and objectives. Through its various programs — “Awaken the Leader Within You,” “Leadership 101: Step Up to the Next Level” and “Become a Nurturing Leader” — the chapter provides members with the tools to hone the skills and talents they possess to improve their workplaces, homes and communities.
Vivian Andrews, WiNUP’s 2021 International President, believes in WiNUP and what membership provides. “This has certainly enhanced our opportunities. We feel better about ourselves, and our careers benefit, as well.”
ArkLaTex members also serve the community. Outreach projects have included adopting the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Home in 2011; helping sort clothing at “Dress for Success,” a nonprofit organization that provides business appropriate clothing for women re-entering the workforce; and assisting with various tasks at the Northwest Louisiana Food Bank.
