About Virginia
Our History
The WiNUP Virginia Chapter became a reality in February 2006, after several women from Roanoke attended the 2005 International Conference in October in Columbus, Ohio. These women, who worked for American Electric Power’s Appalachian Power Company, had heard of WiNUP, yet were not really familiar with the organization’s purpose. They quickly learned other Virginians had a similar interest upon their arrival at the conference.
These women were so inspired by the conference that they knew immediately they wanted to be a part of WiNUP, an organization developed by women that creates a forum for professional and personal development.
Energized by their experience, they immediately set about forming the Virginia Chapter. It took only a few months to accomplish the necessary requirements and receive their charter.
The chapter elected Carolyn Gordon as first Chair and Barbara Carter as Vice Chair. Karen Harris was the first Treasurer, Marjorie Chaddick the first Secretary and Robbie Pierce the first International Board Representative. West Virginia Chapter’s Donna Campbell installed the new chapter’s first officers.
The chapter made significant strides in its first eight years. Within two years of its founding, members took on the challenge of hosting the International Conference, presenting a very successful event in 2008 at the historic Hotel Roanoke.
